Indonesia to Implement Environmental Pollution Tax Amid Air Pollution Issue

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is carrying out emission tests to encourage the reduction of environmental pollution. On August 17, 2023, the ministry tested hundreds of vehicles at Manggala Wanabakti Building. 

The emission test is a response to the deteriorating air quality in Jakarta and its surrounding area. The ministry said that anyone who does not comply with the obligation of emission tests will be sanctioned with an environmental pollution tax in accordance with the existing regulation.

Directorate General of Pollution Management Sigit Reliantoro explained that one of the sources of air pollution is transportation. Thus, the ministry has to ensure all vehicles are properly maintained. One of the measures to guarantee this condition is the emission test.

In addition, the Secretary General of the ministry, Bambang Hendroyono said that the public will be given two chances to conduct emission tests. Bambang also explains that the emission test will be conducted for three months, and its impact on the environment will be evaluated.

The emission test is conducted with the purpose of knowing the rate of compliance towards the emission standard based on Ministry Regulation No. 5 of 2006. Meanwhile, quoting, the emission test is the implementation of Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 concerning environmental protection and management Article 206. The article obliged every vehicle user to fulfill the requirements of the emission limit.
